An Alternative Self
 Who walks at your side in the forest on the darkest night? In Victor Hugo's poem, «À quoi songeaient les deux cavaliers dans la forêt», (What the two knights in the forest thought), the narrator says "at my side, Hermann was like a ghost."
 We all have shadows, even at night in the gloomy forest. You can call yours by another name: your invisible companion. Your conscience, your soul, perhaps your alter ego. Your shadow may have a name, like Hermann.
 Or your shadow could be your perfume. It is your alter ego. You can contradict it, you can challenge it, you can test the limits of your own ways of thinking. You can meditate on the finer facets of existence. But you can't lose your alter ego, ever, ever. It is your alternate self. As you advance in life and contemplate its meaning, ask questions that cannot be answered. When you are overwhelmed by uncertainties, look to your shadow. Perhaps you will find an answer. Maybe not. At least, though, you will have an interesting encounter.
