Los Angeles. Here, in the city of fallen angels, fantasy dominates.

In "On the Road," Jack Kerouac wrote, "Los Angeles is the most depressing and brutal city in America." It is the city described by Woody Allen's character in Annie Hall, or the city where the only cultural advantage is that you can turn right at a red light. "

But the dreamers arrive, for the sun and the possibilities, in this land of opportunity where hope springs eternal. Whatever they are looking for - happiness, love, money, fame - temptations draw them even more to this asphalt paradise.

Does Los Angeles have a perfume? Impossible to say. But Chandler Burr knows Los Angeles. And Chandler Burr knows about perfumes. We therefore decided to create a perfume that a woman from Los Angeles could wear. And we gave it the name of a Chandler novel set in Los Angeles.

You dreamers, along with your dreams - you may blossom, you may wither, but not die. Keep coming, or thinking about coming, and sometimes you stay.

Because someday, someone might just be looking for you, pointing to you, wanting you. Or someone like you.

A few years ago, I wrote a novel called You Or Someone Like You, set in Los Angeles. The main character is a woman, Anne Rosenbaum, who lives in the Hollywood Hills with her husband, Howard, a film studio executive.

As many have noted, Los Angeles is not a city. It is a state of mind. A strange amalgam of places and languages. Los Angeles is rivers of concrete freeways and endless strips of asphalt, traffic and - because of or thanks to it all - is one of the most breathtaking places on earth.

This perfume is very distinctive. When Etienne de Swardt asked me about the creative direction of a perfume whose name would be the title of my novel, I told my perfumer, Caroline Sabas, that we were creating the perfume that Anne would wear. She is also very particular. Cold and decidedly English, immersed but immune from the materialism of the film industry, sophisticated, but somehow alien.

You Or Someone Like You is not the "Los Angeles perfume" or the smell captured by the Hollywood Hills. It is not one of those olfactory syneddochi. Instead, in my opinion in terms of style and technical construction, what a woman from Los Angeles could wear.

“My imaginary Anne wears it; as will presumably thousands of other women. It represents her only in the way that all these choices represent us. What it will be for you, it will be up to you to decide, of course. "
